The Borough of Medford Lakes, New Jersey, became the 10th town in the state to pass a measure rebating permit-to-carry fees, but with the distinction that it is the first town to not rebate the full $150 of the municipal portion of the state-mandated fee.
Resolution 125-25 passed on October 22, with a unanimous vote of four to zero, with one party absent. The measure was introduced by Mayor Fields, with Deputy Mayor O’Neill and Councilmen Bailey and Yowell voting in support. Councilman Cranston was absent.
News2A reached out to Mayor Field numerous times for comment, and as of this writing he has not responded.
Unlike the previous nine towns in the state, which have rebated the full $150 municipal portion of the fee, Medford Lakes still wants a portion to cover costs stating, “The borough has determined that there is an administrative cost at the municipal level that can be covered by a $50 fee…”
The borough council voted to refund only two-thirds of the state-mandated $150 municipal fee in the amount of $100. The refund is valid for any applicant that paid the fee as of October 22, and who submits a valid receipt to the Medford Lakes CFO. The resolution is effective immediately.
According to the permit to carry dashboard published by the office of the Attorney General, Medford Lakes has a population of 4,264 and has issued 52 approved permits to carry so far. Assuming all 52 permit holders reapply every two years, the town recoups $2,600 in administrative fees, according to the new measure.
